Spring clean for Wave Break Island ahead of summer

The Gold Coast Waterways Authority (GCWA) will give Wave Break Island a spring clean this September, helping prepare the popular day-use destination for the busier months ahead.

The works will take place from Monday 21 September to Friday 25 September 2026 and will include vegetation management and the removal of debris and waste.

GCWA Acting CEO Andrew Mahon said the works reflected the priorities raised by the community.

“People care deeply about Wave Break Island and want to see it properly looked after. We do too,” Mr Mahon said.

“Feedback received during the 2025 feasibility study showed strong support for protecting the island’s character and environment.

“With summer approaching, now is a good time for our crews to give the island a bit of a spruce-up.

Mr Mahon said visitors also had an important role in caring for Wave Break Island.

“We ask everyone visiting the island to take their rubbish with them, respect the environment and leave it ready for others to enjoy.”

Visitors are asked to follow on-site signage and directions from the crew while the works are underway.
