The Spit Master Plan

After an 18-month planning process, the Queensland Government released The Spit Master Plan in May 2019.

The community helped shape the Master Plan through more than 23,000 pieces of feedback received during the master planning process, and conversations with thousands of people at pop-up sessions and other events.

The Gold Coast Waterways Authority has been a part of the process since day one and now, we’re excited to be implementing some of the projects set out in the Master Plan.

When the plan was released, the Queensland Government announced it would invest $60 million to begin implementing the plan.

Wave Break Island Feasibility Study

The Gold Coast Waterways Authority is undertaking a feasibility investigation into The Spit Master Plan intent for Wave Break Island to be a natural retreat in the heart of The Broadwater.

Construction is in full swing at Muriel Henchman Park and The Spit boat ramps.

February 18, 2024

As part of The Spit Master Plan implementation, we are upgrading the boat ramps, existing pontoon and adding a floating walkway. Parking, pathways, landscaping and public amenities will also be improved.

The Spit Identity Strategy

Creating distinct visual identities for public spaces helps establish integrated destination planning and management that adds value to the economy, social fabric and ecology. The Spit Identity Strategy sets out the cohesive visual identities created for both The Spit as a whole and a series of distinct but connected visual identities for the master plan precincts. The strategy sets a consistent visual style that celebrates how The Spit shines as the Gold Coast’s park for nature and play and ensures The Spit is easily recognised as a destination.

The Queensland Government worked with Burleigh Heads based design agency, Relative Creative, to develop final placemaking and identity concepts for The Spit. We’d like to thank community members for providing their thoughts and ideas on earlier draft concepts.

The final placemaking identity builds on the standards established through The Spit Public Realm Guidelines and will be threaded through the precincts as projects roll out, giving The Spit its own unique brand. You’ll see this incorporated on features such as signage and street furniture.
