Annual Maintenance Program: Sand Bypass System Jetty

The Gold Coast Sand Bypass Jetty will commence the annual maintenance painting program with the entire structure to be re-painted at once for the first time in 2025.

The Sand Bypass System pumps 500,000 cubic meters of sand northwards every year to ensure the Seaway entrance remains clear. It plays a critical part in keeping the entrance to the Gold Coast Seaway safe and navigable.

Sand is also pumped southwards to the Gold Coast’s beaches via the Surfers Paradise Sand Backpass System that runs from The Spit to Surfers Paradise. To ensure the safety and longevity of the jetty and sand pumping systems, regular protective coating maintenance is required.

The jetty extends 494 meters into the sea and support the pipe work and jet pumps. The jetty also serves as a maintenance platform to allow mobile cranes to service the pumping hardware.

The SBS jetty is a working platform and for safety reasons is not open to the public when operation, undergoing maintenance or during severe weather events. The jetty will be closed for public access until the end of 2025 while these maintenance works, and sand pumping operations take place.

Your understanding is appreciated, to find alternative jetty facilities please visit the GCWA destinations map.
