Keeping Doug Jennings Park beautiful

As part of the ongoing maintenance program for Doug Jennings Park at The Spit, the Gold Coast Waterways Authority (GCWA) is planning rehabilitation works for the area known as the ‘Spit Finger’. GCWA CEO Hal Morris says that it is the next important step in maintaining the amenity of the area for the whole community.

“We have already invested significant funding over the last 18 months in the area through our delivery of the Seaway Diver Access Stairs, a new amenities block, sewerage connection, additional beach showers and dog wash and upgraded Seaway Kiosk toilets,” said Mr Morris.

“These rehabilitation works are the next step in the planned program for the area and will provide a much needed upgrade to one of the most popular spots on the Gold Coast,” said Mr Morris.

Planning and consultation is currently progressing with the works expected the commence in early may and take up to three months to complete. The area affected will be closed to the public during the works which has been scheduled to take place outside of peak summer and tourist times and to fit in with planned community events to ensure minimal disruption.

Included in the $500,000 project will be resurfacing the road, creating formalised parking areas, installing vehicle barriers and revegetating the degraded areas. The project focusses on the peninsula of land known as the Spit Finger only and there won’t be any impact on the rest of Doug Jennings Park or The Spit area.

GCWA is continuing to engage with key stakeholders and community groups on this project, reinforcing positive relationships that have been built across a range of GCWA initiatives to deliver the best possible outcomes for the local community and environment.
