Next phase of Doug Jennings Park improvements complete
Stage Four of the revitalisation works for one of the Gold Coast’s most-loved parks, Doug Jennings Park at The Spit, has been completed just in time for Christmas.
The latest upgrade means in the last four years, over $5.7 million has been invested in the popular day trip destination managed by the Gold Coast Waterways Authority (GCWA.)
The works include a major upgrade to the road between Seaworld Drive and Moondarewa Spit, additional marked parking spaces, a shared footpath around the park perimeter, landscaping, native shade trees, more picnic tables and park benches.
GCWA acting CEO, Jessica Bourner, said that throughout all four stages of the upgrades GCWA has engaged with community groups and members of the public to make sure the projects delivered what Gold Coasters really wanted.
“The feedback we’ve received has been overwhelmingly positive,’ said Ms Bourner. “The latest improvements to Doug Jennings Park mean that getting out for a bike ride or a walk beside the Broadwater is now even easier.
“We’ve listened to what the community has told us and provided more opportunities to enjoy a picnic or just sit quietly and take in all that the surrounding waterways have to offer.
“What we hear most commonly is that people already love Doug Jennings Park but that these projects have made it even better,” Ms Bourner said.
Previous stages have delivered a new amenities block, two sets of emergency access stairs to the Seaway, refurbishment of the existing Seaway Kiosk toilet block, rehabilitation of Moondarewa Spit and the upgrade and completion of the ring road and footpaths around Doug Jennings Park.
