New transport connections planned for The Spit

A $4 million pontoon and jetty in Marine Stadium is the next project to be delivered at The Spit under the implementation of the Master Plan.

The pontoon and jetty will improve transport connections to the top of the Spit for those travelling by water.

Once complete, passenger ferries and recreational and commercial vessels will be able to pull up at the facility and drop people off to enjoy a day out at The Spit, creating a new experience for locals and visitors to enjoy.

Emergency services will also be able to use the facilities if needed.

During consultation on The Spit Master Plan, community members said they wanted to see an improved recreational space and more transport options for accessing The Spit.

We’ll be seeking expressions of interest from construction contractors in late May 2021 with onsite works due to begin in August this year.

For safety reasons, an exclusion zone will be established at the northern end of Marine Stadium during construction works.

We’ll be notifying boats moored in the area about the restrictions before works start and will provide updates through our website and social media accounts.

Importantly, the foreshore areas we recently upgraded on Moondarewa Spit will remain open for the community to enjoy while work is underway.

In line with the community’s vision under The Spit Master Plan, the facilities in Marine Stadium will create safe, multi-purpose access via the water to the area. This includes the opportunity for a ferry connection to the Top of The Spit during events.

People will have the opportunity to fish from the jetty, stroll along it or relax and enjoy the water views.
