Students get a lesson in coastal management
Year 8 geography students from Redbank Plains State High School got a firsthand look at how the Gold Coast’s beaches and waterways are managed during a visit with the Gold Coast Waterways Authority (GCWA) and City of Gold Coast.
As part of their coastal geography studies, students learned about the Gold Coast Sand Bypassing System and how it helps maintain the natural movement of sand along the coastline.
The GCWA team explained how the system works, and the ongoing maintenance required to keep this important infrastructure operating, helping to maintain safe navigation through the Seaway and protect our beaches.
Students also discovered the important role Wave Break Island plays in reducing wave energy entering the Broadwater and creating calmer conditions for recreational activities.
The visit provided a valuable opportunity to connect classroom learning with real-world examples of coastal management, while highlighting the work undertaken by GCWA to keep our waterways safer, accessible and enjoyable for everyone.
