Upgrades on the way for the Jabiru Island boat ramp

March 7, 2023/in Latest News, Project, Project News/by GCWA

A popular Paradise Point boat ramp near the Broadwater is set to undergo major upgrades in the coming months.

The $950,000 project will commence in May 2023 and will see recreational boat ramp lanes at Jabiru Island expanded and upgraded to the latest specifications.

The Jabiru Island boat ramp is an important access point for recreational boaties. It is located on the southern side of Jabiru Island, near the junction of the southern arm of the Coomera River, Coombabah Creek, and Saltwater Creek.

Gold Coast Waterways Authority (GCWA) Chief Executive Chris Derksema said maintaining boat ramp facilities was an important part of ensuring safe navigable access for waterway users.

“Especially as demand for these facilities continues to climb on the Gold Coast,” Chris Derksema said.

“These upgrades are part of the $50.4 million investment in construction and upgrade projects to improve access to the Gold Coast waterways recommended in the Gold Coast Waterways Management Program 2022‐26.

Boaties and other recreational users will be able to access three other mixed‐use lanes on weekends while the work is carried out.

The Jabiru Island boat ramp upgrades project is expected to be completed by October 2023, or earlier. More details are available in the project factsheet.

Coomera River channel dredging project

March 7, 2023/in Latest News, Project, Project News/by GCWA

A significant dredging campaign that will deepen the Coomera River channel and improve navigation will soon get underway.

The Coomera River channel dredging project is scheduled to start in April and will be delivered through the Gold Coast Waterways Management Program (WMP) 2022‐26.

It’s good news for a wide variety of commercial, industrial, residential, and recreational waterway users who use the river as a primary access way.

Gold Coast Waterways Authority Chief Executive Officer Chris Derksema said dredging of the Coomera River channel is maintenance undertaken every two years under the WMP.

“We’re committed to maintaining open and safe access for all waterways users. Two dredges will be working simultaneously to ensure minimal disruption during this campaign,” Mr Derksema said.

“Reusing the sand is an extra benefit of the project with approximately 35,000 cubic metres of sand from downstream of Sanctuary Cove to aid sand nourishment at northern Gold Coast beaches.”

Sediment which is unsuitable to be used on the beach will be transferred via a pipeline for processing at the Coomera dredged sediment management facility (pictured).

The Coomera River channel dredging project is expected to commence in April and be completed by late June 2023.

New module for Alberton pontoon

February 20, 2023/in Latest News, Project, Project News/by GCWA

A popular Alberton marine facility on the Logan River has been repaired after the pontoon module was structurally damaged during flooding in 2022.

The Alberton pontoon module at August Burow Park was entirely replaced with an upgraded module of the same size that offers enhanced functionality for recreational users.

The $200,000 project delivered by the Gold Coast Waterways Authority in February 2023 included upgrades to the facility’s specifications that improve its performance and life cycle.

The pontoon is an important piece of infrastructure that can be used as a queuing facility and for berthing (a maximum of 20 minutes) by recreational vessels. It may be used for other recreational activities such as fishing as long as they give way to vessels that wish to berth at the structure.
